We ensure that the children participate in a wide variety of sports both as part of their curriculum time P.E lessons and as extra-curricular activities. Children learn in P.E and science the importance of keeping fit and a healthy lifestyle. We encourage all children to take part in competitions and work closely with Lancaster Royal Grammar School to offer all children a chance to take part in competitive sport.
As part of the Olympic legacy the Government announced that all schools would receive a ring-fenced premium to be spent on improving the quality of P.E and sport activities on offer to all children. Pupils receive the funding for the academic year 2016-17. Each school will receive £16,000 plus an extra £10 per pupil.
The impact this has had on school has meant that a highly qualified P.E teacher has been employed to develop the curriculum and teach alongside current staff to deliver P.E lessons. In addition to this the school has worked with a City of Lancaster gymnastics and dance coach to deliver these areas of the curriculum. The Nursery and Reception children have weekly dance lessons provided by a dance teacher from Diddidance. To support the teaching of of P.E some of the funding has been used to purchase materials and resources.
In addition to this funding for 2017/18 is being used to further develop the outdoor provision for the early years to widen their opportunities to enhance the physical development area of the curriculum. All children will be given the opportunity to take part in outdoor and adventurous activity through the investment and development of the Forest Schools area. We are committed to encouraging children to lead healthy lifestyles and we are focusing on mindfulness for mental wellbeing of children. This is being achieved through working with Relax Kids to provide children with strategies to pay more attention to their own thoughts and feelings and those of others.
The funding has meant that children have taken part in inter-school sports competitions which have been set up between a family of local primary schools supported by Lancaster Royal Grammar School. This connection has lead to regular and sustainable inter-school competitions in a variety of sports for both Key Stage 1 and 2.
We are part of the Lune Valley Cluster of schools which provide us with further opportunities for inter-school sports competitions such as Rounders, Cross-country and Football.
All children in our school have weekly swimming lessons at Lancaster University which means that our children are very confident and safe in the water. Children also visit the Isle of Man for a one week residential trip when they are in year 5 or 6. This gives them the opportunity to learn a variety of skills in the outdoors and mix with children from other local schools.
